Drive Times Between Kentucky Distilleries, Cluster by Cluster

Kentucky distilleries sit 5 to 30 minutes apart inside a cluster and about 30 to 90 minutes apart between clusters. BourbonTown Tours plans against five driving clusters: Louisville, Bardstown and beyond, Frankfort and Versailles, Lawrenceburg, and Lexington. End to end, downtown Louisville to downtown Lexington is about 90 minutes, and Maker's Mark to Buffalo Trace is about an hour and fifteen.

Drive times from the three pickup cities

We pick up in Louisville, Bardstown and Lexington, so every day starts with one of these legs. Read any row either way, from Lexington to Bardstown or back, and treat each figure as a typical drive rather than a promise.

Two footnotes. Maker's Mark in Loretto is about 30 minutes past Bardstown, so a Maker's day is a Bardstown day plus about an hour of round-trip driving. James B. Beam in Clermont sits on the road south out of Louisville, and Bulleit in Shelbyville sits on the road east toward Frankfort, so each can take a stop on the way rather than a detour. The full list of stops in each cluster is in our distillery directory by driving cluster.

The distillery-to-distillery hops people ask about

Inside a cluster the hops are short. In Bardstown, Heaven Hill to Bardstown Bourbon Company is about 5 minutes and Heaven Hill to Willett about 8. Limestone Branch is about 20 minutes from Maker's Mark, so the drive south can pick up a second stop. In the Frankfort and Versailles cluster, Woodford Reserve in Versailles is about 25 minutes from Buffalo Trace, and Castle and Key sits a short drive from Buffalo Trace in the same cluster. Four Roses and Wild Turkey are a short drive apart in Lawrenceburg.

Between clusters the hops grow. Buffalo Trace is about an hour from Louisville and about 30 minutes from Lexington, which is why Lexington is the closer base for a Buffalo Trace day. Maker's Mark is about 50 minutes to Bardstown plus 30 more to Loretto from Louisville. Maker's Mark to Buffalo Trace is about an hour and fifteen minutes, the leg to keep off a single day. See the Buffalo Trace distillery guide and the Maker's Mark distillery guide for what each stop needs on site.

How long is the whole route?

There is no single road to drive. The distilleries most visitors want sit in a band from Louisville in the west to Lexington in the east, with Bardstown and Loretto to the south. Louisville to downtown Lexington is about 90 minutes. Louisville to Bardstown is about 50, and Bardstown to Lexington about 75. Driving all five clusters in one go adds up to several hours of road time before a single tour, which is why nobody does it in a day.

The useful number is time per day, not miles in total. A tour day runs 6 to 8 hours door to door, and the drive out and back comes out of that. A Louisville-based day in Frankfort and Versailles spends about two hours of it on the round trip. A Lexington-based day in the same cluster spends about an hour or less. Our guide to how many days a bourbon trip needs turns these times into one-, two- and three-day plans.

How we plan around drive times

We keep each day inside one cluster, and we choose the hotel city by the clusters, not the other way round. Windshield time, not distance, decides what fits. Three stops inside one cluster leaves time to stand still at each one. Three stops spread across two clusters leaves time for the car.

We never put Maker's Mark and Buffalo Trace on the same day. Each needs about two hours on site, and the hour and fifteen minutes between them leaves nothing for a third stop or a real lunch. We split them across two days or pick one. We also check names that sit in two clusters: Bardstown Bourbon Company has its distillery in Bardstown and a tasting room on the Louisville list, so a Louisville day can include the name without the run south.

Self-planners should leave more room between stops than the map suggests. On a transportation-only day, 45 minutes between stops is tight and an hour is comfortable. The bourbon tour transportation page covers hourly bookings.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Buffalo Trace from Louisville?

Buffalo Trace in Frankfort is about an hour from Louisville by car. Louisville to the Frankfort and Versailles cluster is about 60 minutes, so a Louisville-based Buffalo Trace day spends about two hours on the round trip. From Lexington, Frankfort is about 30 minutes. BourbonTown Tours picks up in all three cities, so the hotel you choose sets the drive.

How far is Lexington from Louisville?

Downtown Louisville to downtown Lexington is about 90 minutes by car. That is the longest regular leg on a Kentucky bourbon trip, so we pick a base by the clusters on your list. Louisville sits closer to Bardstown and the city distilleries. Lexington sits closer to Versailles, Frankfort and Lawrenceburg, all 15 to 30 minutes away.

How far is Maker's Mark from Louisville?

Plan on about an hour and twenty minutes. Louisville to Bardstown is about 50 minutes, and Maker's Mark in Loretto sits about 30 minutes past Bardstown. Add about two hours on site for the tour, tasting and wax dipping. A Maker's day works best paired with Heaven Hill or Willett in Bardstown, not with Buffalo Trace.

How far apart are Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve?

About 25 minutes. Woodford Reserve in Versailles and Buffalo Trace in Frankfort sit in the same driving cluster, with Castle and Key nearby. That makes the three a natural one-day route from Lexington or Louisville. Castle and Key is closed Monday and Tuesday, and Woodford Reserve opens Thursday to Monday in January and February.

Can you visit Maker's Mark and Buffalo Trace in one day?

Not well. They sit about an hour and fifteen minutes apart, and each needs about two hours on site. That leaves little room for a third stop or a sit-down lunch in a 6 to 8 hour day. We split them across two days or pick one, then fill the day from the same cluster.

How long does it take to drive the whole distillery route?

There is no single route. The distilleries sit in five clusters spread from Louisville to Lexington, with Bardstown and Loretto to the south. Louisville to Lexington alone is about 90 minutes. We keep each day inside one cluster, so a Louisville-based day in Frankfort and Versailles spends about two hours on the round trip, and a Lexington-based day there about an hour or less.
