Kentucky Bourbon Events in 2027, Month by Month
Updated November 2026 · BourbonTown Tours
BourbonTown Tours' 2027 Kentucky bourbon calendar starts with the Bourbon Classic in Louisville, February 24 to 27, and peaks in spring with the Keeneland Spring Meet (April 2 to 23), Thunder Over Louisville (April 17), the Kentucky Oaks (April 30) and the Kentucky Derby (May 1). Fall brings the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown, September 16 to 19. Every date below comes from the organizer's own site.
We run private bourbon tours out of Louisville, Lexington and Bardstown all year. This page shows what is happening each month in 2027 and how we plan tours around it: when to book, which cities get crowded, and how we route the day so you taste bourbon instead of sitting in event traffic.

January 2027: Lock In Spring Before It Fills
January has no major bourbon events, and that is the point. It is the month to book April and May. The dates that go first are Thursday through Saturday in late April and Derby week.
January is also a good month to tour. Distilleries keep winter schedules, so we confirm every stop when we build your itinerary, and holiday-week tours are subject to distillery availability. In exchange you get smaller crowds at the tasting bar and more choice of reservation times.
Do the math on Buffalo Trace now. Its calendar opens up to eight weeks ahead, so dates in early March open during January. If your trip is in spring, the reservation window is not open yet. That is fine. Book your tour first, and we build the itinerary around the reservations available for your date. Start with our custom bourbon tours page to see how a planning call works.
February 2027: The Bourbon Classic in Louisville
The 2027 Bourbon Classic runs February 24 to 27 in Louisville, according to BourbonClassic.com. It is a Louisville event built around tastings, cocktails, master distillers and food, which makes it the one big bourbon weekend of the winter.
If you come in for the Classic, add a private tour day before or after it. Louisville's downtown distilleries and the Bardstown distilleries are both an easy day from a Louisville hotel. Our private bourbon tours from Louisville page shows how we pick you up and route the day.
February is also the month when spring reservation windows start opening. Thunder Over Louisville is April 17, so Buffalo Trace dates for that weekend open about eight weeks earlier, in late February. Keeneland opening week (April 2) opens in early February. If you want a specific distillery on a specific spring Saturday, get your tour on the books in February.
March 2027: Buffalo Trace Opens Derby Week Dates
March is a shoulder month. Distillery days are calmer than spring, and the Keeneland and Derby crowds have not arrived. It is a strong month for a first bourbon tour or a long weekend from out of state.
Buffalo Trace releases one more week of reservations every Wednesday at 10 AM Eastern, so dates for Derby week open in early March. If you are coming for the Oaks and the Derby and want a distillery day on Thursday or the Sunday after, book that tour 4 to 6 months ahead, by early January.
Lodging works the same way. Louisville hotel demand climbs through Derby week, and guests who book rooms late end up farther from the city. Settle the hotel first, then the tour. Our where to stay in Kentucky bourbon country guide covers Louisville, Lexington and Bardstown options.
April 2027: Keeneland, Thunder and the Start of Derby Season
April is the busiest event month of the year in central Kentucky.
- Keeneland Spring Meet, April 2 to 23. Live racing in Lexington, with no racing on Mondays or Tuesdays, per Keeneland.com.
- Thunder Over Louisville, Saturday, April 17. The Kentucky Derby Festival's opening show, per ThunderOverLouisville.org.
- Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon and Marathon, Saturday, April 24, per KDF.org.
Routing is where April tours are won or lost. On Thunder Saturday, downtown Louisville fills with crowds, so we run that day's tour outside the city and get you back early. During the Keeneland meet, we pair a Lexington race day with a distillery day on either side. Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace sit close to Lexington, so a Keeneland race track visit and a Lexington private bourbon tour fit the same trip.
May 2027: The Kentucky Oaks and the 153rd Kentucky Derby
The 153rd Kentucky Derby runs Saturday, May 1, 2027, at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Oaks runs Friday, April 30. Churchill Downs posts both dates on KentuckyDerby.com.
Derby week is the hardest week of the year to book anything in Louisville: vehicles, drivers, hotel rooms and distillery reservations. We do not run Derby tours. We provide transportation to and from the Derby: groups hire our vehicles for Derby Day, and we price that by the vehicle, not by the person. Derby rates include tax and gratuity, plus the 3% booking fee, and they print on our bourbon tour cost page. Any party of up to 14 can book the van at the van rate. To book vehicles for Derby Day 2027, start with Kentucky Derby transportation.
We do not run tours on Derby Day. Thursday, or the Sunday after the Derby, gives you a full tasting day without race traffic, booked as a normal custom tour. If you want to see the track on a calmer day, add a Churchill Downs tour. After Derby weekend, May settles into strong spring touring weather and easier reservations.
June, July and August 2027: Open Dates and Summer Celebrations
Summer has no major statewide bourbon festival on the calendar, which makes it the easiest stretch of the year to book. Across the year, our tours concentrate Thursday through Saturday. In summer, Sunday through Wednesday dates are wide open, and distillery reservations are easier to land than in spring or fall.
Summer is the season for celebration trips: bachelor party bourbon tours, bachelorette party tours and birthday bourbon tours. Kentucky summers run hot, and every BTT vehicle is stocked with water. Lunch falls between stops one and two, or two and three, depending on the itinerary, and we book the reservation for you.
Plan September here too. The Kentucky Bourbon Festival opens September 16, so Buffalo Trace dates for festival week open about eight weeks earlier, in mid-to-late July. If you want a Bardstown or Frankfort distillery on festival weekend, book your tour 6 months or more ahead, by mid-March.
September 2027: Kentucky Bourbon Festival and Bourbon & Beyond
September is bourbon's busiest month in Kentucky.
- Kentucky Bourbon Festival, September 16 to 19, 2027, Bardstown. The festival's site, KyBourbonFestival.com, posts the 2027 dates. As of October 2026, the 2027 ticket on-sale date had not been announced.
- Bourbon & Beyond, Louisville. The 2026 festival ran September 24 to 27 at the Highland Festival Grounds at the Kentucky Exposition Center. The organizer had not posted 2027 dates as of October 2026.
Bardstown is a small town, and festival weekend fills its hotels and roads. We plan festival-week tours two ways. Guests who want Bardstown distilleries tour on the days before the festival opens. Guests attending the festival tour Louisville or Frankfort distilleries on festival days and come back to Bardstown for the events. Our Bardstown private bourbon tours page covers the distilleries in town.
October 2027: Keeneland Fall Meet and Peak Fall Touring
Keeneland's fall meet runs most of October. The 2026 meet ran October 2 to 24.
October is one of the strongest touring months of the year, so treat it like spring: book early, ahead of the usual 2 to 4 months, especially for Friday and Saturday. A fall weekend in Lexington pairs a Keeneland race day with a distillery day, the same way the spring meet does. Groups who want more tastings in fewer hours can look at the Barrel Crawl, a tastings-only format at $299, $269 or $239 per person depending on group size, plus 6% KY sales tax and a 3% booking fee.
October is also corporate outing season. Our corporate bourbon tours use the same pricing as custom tours, and groups over 14 travel in multiple vehicles or a contracted bus or motor coach, quoted on the call.
November 2027: Thanksgiving Week and Holiday Schedules
November is quieter at distilleries than October, and early November weekends still book well. Thanksgiving week changes the picture. Distilleries post their own holiday hours, and tours that week are subject to distillery availability, so we confirm every stop when we build the itinerary.
November is also the month to plan December gifts and holiday outings. A bourbon tour gift card covers a future tour date, and our holiday and seasonal celebrations page covers office parties and family trips. If you are flying in for a fall or holiday tour, our guide to planning a bourbon tour from out of state walks through airports and hotel pickup.
December 2027: Holiday Tours and Planning for 2028
December is the quietest touring month, and the last two weeks are the quietest of all. That makes December a good month for a small private tour with open reservation times, as long as you plan around holiday schedules. Holiday tours are subject to distillery availability.
December 5 marks the 1933 ratification of the 21st Amendment, which ended Prohibition.
December is also when the next year's calendar starts to post. Organizers often announce the following year's dates months ahead, the way Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, Keeneland and the Bourbon Classic had already posted 2027 dates by October 2026. We refresh this calendar every January.
How We Plan Tours Around Kentucky's Event Calendar
Every event weekend follows the same three rules.
First, we book the reservation window, not the event. Buffalo Trace opens each date up to eight weeks ahead, every Wednesday at 10 AM Eastern. Book your tour before that window opens, and we build the day around the distillery tickets available, which are included in your price.
Second, we route away from the event on event day. On Thunder Saturday and Bardstown festival days, the host city fills up. Your tour runs where the crowd is not, and you see the event on your own terms. On Derby Day we run transportation, not tours, and get your group to and from Churchill Downs.
Third, we size the vehicle to the group. Our Audi A8 sedan carries up to 3 guests, SUVs carry up to 6 and vans carry 7 to 14. Event-weekend driver schedules fill before anything else, so larger groups should call first. Custom tours typically run three stops, and we can add or subtract on your planning call.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Kentucky Derby in 2027?
The 153rd Kentucky Derby runs Saturday, May 1, 2027, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, and the Kentucky Oaks runs the day before, Friday, April 30. Churchill Downs posts both dates on KentuckyDerby.com. Derby week is the hardest week of the year to book in Louisville, so we recommend reserving your Derby vehicle as soon as you have tickets. We provide transportation to and from the Derby, not Derby tours; see our Kentucky Derby transportation page for per-vehicle rates.
When is the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in 2027?
The 2027 Kentucky Bourbon Festival runs September 16 to 19 in Bardstown, according to the festival's own site. As of October 2026, the festival had not announced its 2027 ticket on-sale date. Bardstown fills up on festival weekend, so we route Bardstown distillery days before the festival opens and run Louisville or Frankfort distilleries for guests attending festival events.
How does Buffalo Trace release tour reservations?
Buffalo Trace releases one more week of tour reservations every Wednesday at 10 AM Eastern, and its calendar opens up to eight weeks ahead, per the distillery's Plan Your Visit page. Guided tastings at the Distillery Gift Shop need no reservation. On a BourbonTown Tours private tour, distillery tickets are included in your price, and we build the itinerary around the reservations available for your date.
How far ahead should I book a bourbon tour for Derby week or festival weekend?
Book as soon as your dates are set. Derby week needs 4 to 6 months of notice, and Bourbon Festival week in mid-September needs 6 months or more. Thunder weekend and the Keeneland meets fall in April and October, which need more notice than the usual 2 to 4 months. Buffalo Trace, which opens reservations eight weeks out, needs at least 10 weeks. Early booking gives you the widest choice of vehicles and tour times. We reply the same day between 8 AM and 8 PM Eastern.
What is the best month for a Kentucky bourbon trip in 2027?
April, May, September and October hold the biggest 2027 events: Keeneland, Thunder Over Louisville, the Kentucky Derby, the Kentucky Bourbon Festival and Bourbon & Beyond. For open dates and easier distillery reservations, plan January through March, or a Sunday through Wednesday trip in summer. Our best times for Kentucky bourbon tours guide breaks down each season.
Can BourbonTown Tours handle a large group during Derby or a festival?
Yes. Our SUVs carry up to 6 guests and our vans carry 7 to 14. Groups over 14 travel in multiple vehicles, or we contract a bus or motor coach, quoted on your planning call. For Derby transportation, any party of up to 14 can book the van at the van rate. Event-weekend driver schedules fill first, so larger groups should call as early as possible.
Pick your 2027 dates. We will build the route around them.
