Tasting Limits and ID Rules on a Kentucky Distillery Tour

Each Kentucky distillery can pour you up to 1.75 ounces of free samples per day, the cap set by state law, which is a little more than one standard 1.5-ounce shot. On a three-stop BourbonTown Tours day, that adds up to as much as 5.25 ounces of tasting pours, spaced across the day with lunch between stops. Every taster needs a valid photo ID.

Kentucky's 1.75-ounce distillery sample rule

Kentucky law sets the size of a distillery tasting. Under KRS 243.0305(8), a distillery holding a sampling license may let visitors sample on the licensed premises during regular business hours, may not charge for the samples, and may not provide more than 1-3/4 ounces of samples per visitor per day, except in connection with a private selection event.

Distilleries say the same thing in their own words. Buffalo Trace states it can offer 1 and 3/4 ounces of tastings per visitor, per day, and its tastings always include Buffalo Trace Bourbon plus featured products on a rotating basis. The cap covers free samples only. Distilleries that hold a retail drink license can also sell drinks on site: Woodford Reserve's Visitor Center cocktail bar serves cocktails, non-alcoholic pours and flights. See our Buffalo Trace distillery guide and Woodford Reserve distillery guide.

How much bourbon that adds up to in a day

The NIAAA defines a standard drink as a 1.5-ounce shot of 80-proof distilled spirits. A full 1.75-ounce tasting is a little more than one standard drink at that proof. Many tasting pours run above 80 proof, so they carry more alcohol per ounce than the standard-drink figure.

On a three-stop day, the free samples top out at 5.25 ounces, which works out to 3.5 standard drinks at 80 proof. That total is spread over the day, not poured at once, and lunch falls between stops 1 and 2 or stops 2 and 3, depending on the itinerary. Anything you buy at a distillery bar or with lunch comes on top of the samples. You do not have to finish a pour. Our three distilleries in one day itinerary shows how a three-stop day is laid out.

What ID you need for a bourbon tasting

You must be 21 to taste at a Kentucky distillery, and you need a valid photo ID to prove it. Woodford Reserve, for one, will not pour a sample without a government-issued photo ID. Buffalo Trace has every guest check in at its Freehouse Welcome Center for an ID check and wristbands, even guests who only want a tasting or the gift shop. Distilleries check ID before the pour, so a guest who leaves ID at the hotel sits out the tasting.

BourbonTown Tours applies the rule to the whole vehicle. Your under-21 guests can ride with the group but skip every pour, and because some distillery experiences admit only guests 21 and over, we check each stop before it goes on your itinerary. Our FAQ covers the rest of the booking rules.

How we pace a tasting day

We plan the day so the pours never stack up. Custom tours typically run three stops, and we can add or subtract on your planning call; a group that wants less bourbon and more time at each stop drops to two. Lunch sits between stops, and we book the reservation for your group with the meal on your tab. Water is stocked in every vehicle, and nobody in your group drives.

Format matters. The Barrel Crawl is tastings only, with no distillery tours, so the day centers on the pour. A standard custom tour puts a production tour in front of each tasting. For how to taste and what to wear, see our bourbon tour dress and tasting guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much bourbon do you get at a distillery tasting?

Up to 1.75 ounces per visitor per day at each Kentucky distillery. State law, KRS 243.0305, caps free distillery samples at that amount, and Buffalo Trace states the same 1 and 3/4 ounce limit. That is a little more than one standard 1.5-ounce shot. Distilleries with a bar, such as Woodford Reserve, also sell cocktails and flights beyond the free samples.

How much will I drink on a three-stop bourbon tour?

Up to 5.25 ounces of free samples across three distilleries, or about 3.5 standard drinks at 80 proof. The pours are spread through the day, and lunch falls between stops 1 and 2 or stops 2 and 3. Many pours run above 80 proof, and anything you buy at a bar comes on top. You never have to finish a pour.

Do you need ID for a bourbon tasting in Kentucky?

Yes. You must be 21, and distilleries check a valid photo ID before you sample. Woodford Reserve requires a government-issued photo ID to taste. Buffalo Trace checks ID and issues wristbands to every guest at its Freehouse Welcome Center. A guest without ID sits out the tasting, so pack it before pickup.

Does everyone on a BourbonTown Tours tour need ID?

Yes. Anyone under 21 can join the day but cannot taste, and a few distillery experiences require every guest to be 21, which we confirm stop by stop as we build the itinerary. Build your guest list around that rule before you book. Distilleries also check ID at the tasting, so a guest who forgets it will sit out the pour at every stop.

Can you buy more drinks at a Kentucky distillery?

Yes, at distilleries with a bar. The 1.75-ounce cap in KRS 243.0305 covers free samples only. Woodford Reserve's Visitor Center cocktail bar serves cocktails, non-alcoholic pours and flights, and guests may visit the bar without a tour ticket. Buffalo Trace's John G. Carlisle Cafe serves food daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
